Recipes Mania News June 2005

Hi Everybody, welcome to issue 6 of Recipes Mania News. A very special welcome to the many who are receiving this ezine for the first time.

As usual it has been a busy month and I find myself apologizing once more for being a few days late in sending this ezine to you. I try to make it by the fifth day of each month but sometimes other things get in the way.

During the past month the website has been viewed in 133 different countries, each with its own culture and unique way of life. When I started Recipes Mania I envisaged visits from a few English speaking countries. We now have regular followings in Spanish, Arabic, French, German, Greek and Hebrew speaking nations. Thanks for your kind support. Without you it would be worthless.

Recipe of the Month

With the French open decided and Wimbledon soon to start I guess summer recipes are the flavor of the month at this time of the year. This month I am cooking chicken wings. This simple ingredient contains the most tasty part of the chicken: With a little added attitude. Ideal for serving at your next barbecue or even eating cold at a picnic.

CHICKEN WINGS with Attitude

2 Lbs (1 kilogram) Chicken Wings

Dash of Tabasco (Or sweet chilli sauce if Tabasco is too hot for you)

½ cup soy sauce

2 Crushed garlic cloves.

1/2 Cup Ketchup

1/2 Cup Honey

Method:

Mix garlic cloves and Tabasco (in pestle and mortar) or sweet chilli sauce if preferred.

Rub wings with garlic and Tabasco (or sweet chilli sauce) - (Good idea to wear gloves and avoid the smell on your hands)

Bake at 375 degrees Farenheit (About 180 degrees C) for 15 min.

Combine honey, soy sauce and ketcup. Pour over wings and bake for 45-60 min. longer.

Health Tip

Governments worldwide are starting to accept that Colon Cancer is fast becoming the biggest threat to longevity. This has been brought about by inadequate diet and lack of exercise in our lifestyle. These are things that we can start doing something about immediately.

Taking exercise first: It doesn't have to be made up of long gym sessions. If you can walk for 30 minutes each day, even in two or three sessions, it will be of great help. I recall a sports trainer in my younger days insisting that the healthiest thing we can do is lose our breath at least once each day. That's great for the youngsters, walking is fine as you get older.

If it is possible to walk up and down a couple of flights of stairs each day, or leave the car at home for one trip, you will satisfy normal exercise needs.

Diet: Our busy lifestyles often lead us to fast food outlets where we buy fried food. Cut this out immediately. Eat as much fruit and vegetables as possible. Whole grain bread is teriffic. Bran on the morning corn flakes or muesli. Nuts, especially almonds are good too.

Finally a tip that I highlighted a few months back. Drink one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water each day. This stimulates your natural stomach juices to do the job they are supposed to do, but often fail to do due to stress.

I have followed this tip religiously and no longer suffer from indegestion. I did suffer badly with indegestion and now save more than $10 each month because I no longer need proprietry medicines.

We only get one body and one life. Let's make the most of it.

Puppy Dog

A farmer had some puppies he needed to sell. He painted a sign advertising the 4 pups. And set about nailing it to a post on the edge of his yard.

As he was driving the last nail into the post, he felt a tug on his overalls. He looked down into the eyes of a little boy.

"Mister," he said, "I want to buy one of your puppies."

"Well," said the farmer, as he rubbed the sweat off the back of his neck, "These puppies come from fine parents and cost a good deal of money."

The boy dropped his head for a moment. Then reaching deep into his pocket, he pulled out a handful of change and held it up to the farmer. "I've got thirty-nine cents. Is that enough to take a look?"

"Sure," said the farmer. And with that he let out a whistle. "Here, Dolly!" he called. Out from the doghouse and down the ramp ran Dolly followed by four little balls of fur.

The little boy pressed his face against the chain link fence. His eyes danced with delight.

As the dogs made their way to the fence, the little boy noticed something else stirring inside the doghouse. Slowly another little ball appeared, this one noticeably smaller.

Down the ramp it slid. Then in a somewhat awkward manner, the little pup began hobbling toward the others, doing its best to catch up....

"I want that one," the little boy said, pointing to the runt.

The farmer knelt down at the boy's side and said, "Son, you don't want that puppy. He will never be able to run and play with you like these other dogs would."

With that the little boy stepped back from the fence, reached down, and began rolling up one leg of his trousers. In doing so he revealed a steel brace running down both sides of his leg attaching itself to a specially made shoe.

Looking back up at the farmer, he said, "You see sir, I don't run too well myself, and he will need someone who understands."

With tears in his eyes, the farmer reached down and picked up the little pup. Holding it carefully he handed it to the little boy.

"How much?" asked the little boy.

"No charge," answered the farmer, "There's no charge for love." The world is full of people who need someone who understands.

Home Safety

Only last week I read a tragic story of half a family lost in a fire. They lived in a remote farmhouse and when the fire started all that the parents could do was force the three eldest children through a window. They both rushed back into the blazing house to save the youngest, a four year old son. Nobody else came out of that house. The three older children had to run barefoot over rough terrain to raise the alarm with the nearest neighbor, almost two miles away.

By the time that the fire service arrived it was already too late. Now there are three orphaned children aged between nine and twelve.

No smoke alarms were fitted in the house. Just imagine what the outcome may have been if a smoke alarm sensed smoke before the fire took hold?

We all think accidents happen to others. Isn't it better to accept that they can happen to you too and take precautions.

Thank you to all who emailed since the last edition of Recipes Mania News. It is only by receiving your feedback that I am able to amend the site to your requirements.

This month I received a couple of complimentary emails concerning our last recipe of the month. Pleased you liked it.

Another email asked about recipes for weight watchers who wish to take up a diet with enough variety to keep them interested. The good news is that I've almost completed an illustrated ebook of healthy vegetarian meals. I am not a vegetarian but if you are really keen on weight loss I think half of your diet should be vegetarian during the diet period. The secret is to find meals that are so interesting that you do not tire of them.

More details in, or before, the next ezine.

Have a happy and safe month.
