Recipes Mania News, Issue #009 October 12, 2005 |
Recipes Mania News October 2005Hi Recipes Maniacs, A special welcome to all of you that subscribed to Recipes Mania News since our last issue. Although we didn't achieve the record number of new subscribers that August produced we were not too short of that figure. I am leaving the links for subscriptions to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina below because the story may no longer be on page one of your newspaper but the needs of the survivors is still very real and desperate.
Also we have had two other major catastrophe's recently with major earthquakes in two of the poorest regions on earth: Pakistan and Aceh Province, Indonesia. Although I don't have links to appeals for these regions I'm sure a donation to one of the International aid agencies will find its way to where it is needed most. - One of the greatest things you can ever do is help total strangers in their hour of need. If you can't afford cash then remember them in your prayers and thoughts.

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is the fastest growing sector on the world wide web today. As more people take it up SPAMMERS are finding it more difficult to make sales. Recipe of the Month - Southern CornbreadSouthern Cornbread:
1/3 cup sifted flour 1 ˝ cups sifted cornmeal (Polenta) 1 teaspoon of baking soda Pinch of salt 2 eggs 1 cup of buttermilk 2 cups of whole milk 1 ˝ tablespoons of butter.
Method:
Preheat oven to 350 F (about 180C) Sift flour, cornmeal, baking soda and salt into a mixing bowl, beat the eggs until foamy then stir them into the dry mixture. Stir in the butter milk and 1 cup of whole milk. Heat the butter in a 9” x 2” pan and when it is very hot (but not brown) pour in the batter. Carefully pour the remaining 1 cup of whole milk on top of the batter without stirring. Place the dish in the oven and bake for 50 minutes, or until set and baked through.
This cornbread is truly great when served hot as part of a barbecue. I promise there will never be any leftovers.
Are You Looking for the Formula of Life?I love people that have a positive outlook on life; they always seem happier than negative people. In my crazy scrambled mind I picture the men who invented the airplane as happy, positive people and wonder if the man who invented the parachute ever smiled in his life. - But that's just me. A few days back I came across the following text. It wasn't credited to anybody but I can't claim that it's mine. Are you giving life everything you’ve got — or could you give a little more? If you’re like most of us, you could give a little more, maybe even a lot more. William James said, “Most people never run far enough on their first wind to find out they've got a second. Give your dreams all you've got and you'll be amazed at the energy that comes out of you.”
You will discover your second wind — and maybe even your third or fourth ones as well — the moment you start passionately pursuing your dreams with all of the hard charging enthusiasm you can muster. You need to get excited about your goals. You need to get cranked up about your dreams. And more than anything else, you need to get charged up about your life. When you follow your heart and fervently chase your dreams, you’ll have more energy than you’ve ever imagined. In fact, you’ll just keep going and going and going. The Bottom Line: Charge your batteries — take charge of your life — and then boldly charge ahead. Walt Disney once said: "If you can dream it you can achieve it." - You'd have to be a brave person to disagree with Walt - he was the ultimate dream builder.
Home SafetyWhen was the last time that you sat down for dinner with the family and conversation was hard to get rolling? I'd like to make a suggestion that will immediately start an interesting and educational conversation and play a big role in making your home safer. Suggest that your smoke alarm just went off and ask a family member what she/he does now? Often the answer is: "I'll run to the front/back door and get to safety." Then suggest that they find the route to the door is blocked by flames and ask them for plan B.
When you have extracted a reasonable plan A and B you should encourage other family members to comment and make suggestions. By the time the meal is finished your family will have put together a workable home evacuation plan and you home will be a safer place to live in. Also you will have made the family engage in a sensible conversation over dinner. - Pick your time and involve everybody in home safety.
