Potato Casserole Recipe | Potatoes au Gratin

This Potato Casserole Recipe (Potatoes au Gratin) makes a nice winter lunch, or dinner, that is simple to prepare. The aroma of the herbs as the meal cooks will fill your home with a delightful fragrance. The meal is very low cost and nourishing. Naturally you can use dried herbs if fresh are not available. Ingredients

  • 2 pounds (900 grams) potatoes
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1/2 cup of diced bacon
  • Rosemary needles
  • Thyme leaves
  • 1 packet cheese sauce mix
  • 1/4 pound (110 grams) grated cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Olive oil

Method

Pre-heat the oven to 350F (180C or gas mark 4).

Par boil the potatoes (washed with skins on) for six minutes in a microwave set on high (100%).

While potatoes are being par boiled, crush the clove of garlic and sauté in a fry pan with the onions and herbs. Cook until onions are just cooked but still firm.

Slice the par boiled potatoes about 5/16 inch (8mm) thick into a greased casserole dish. Add the contents of the fry pan.

Mix the cheese sauce mix and pour over the potatoes.

Cover the casserole dish and place in oven for 45 minutes.

After 45 minutes, remove the cover from the casserole dish, add bacon and grated cheese.Leave uncovered and cook for a further 15 minutes.

This potatoes au gratin casserole recipe is suitable for two adults and makes a fine winter lunch or dinner.

Note: If you wish, bacon can be replaced with Pancetta.

Enjoy your meal.Bon appetit.

I have seen ham used instead of bacon and although I prefer to use bacon the use of ham isn't going to spoil the recipe. In fact if ham is your taste then it will enhance it for you.

Variations

Sweet potato can be mixed with the potato.

Add pieces of bacon or ham to the pan saute.
