German Potato Dumplings

Make these easy German Potato Dumplings (Kartoffelkloesse) as an alternative to mashed potatoes.

Potato Dumplings


  • 2 lbs potatoes
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1 egg
  • Salt, pepper and nutmeg to taste
  • Butter
  • Croutons (optional)


Boil potatoes until tender. Peel and mash or coarsely grate.

Mix in flour, egg and seasonings.

Roll into 1" balls. Optional: put one or more croutons into the center of each ball.

Drop into gently-boiling salted water. Stir to keep dumplings from sticking to the bottom of the pan. Cook uncovered for 8 to 10 minutes.

Drain and coat lightly with melted butter. Serve immediately.
